Calculator is one tool aids in learning mathematics. There are two types of calculators, regular calculator and scientific calculator. One example of scientific calculator is graph calculator. Graph calculator can solve math problems quickly and displays them in graphical form, it also can create programs that can solve math problems.
By using the graph calculator as a tool of learning mathematics in the classroom, students can be directly involved in the process of mathematical calculation. In addition students can also match the results of a calculation answer without using calculator with calculations using this calculator. Graph calculator can accelerate meaning, contemplate, analyze data and connect it.
One example of graph calculator is Texas Instruments TI 89.
There are several important command from the Texas Instrument TI 89 calculator :
1. Solve command : command of the feature algebra. We can determine the set of settlement in Linear Inequalities, Quadratic Equations, Equations 2 System of linear equations, systems of linear equations one another quadratic equations, Systems of Equations 3 variables.
2. Simult command: command of the feature matrix. We can solve systems of linear equations three variables using this command.
3. Ekspand command : command of the feature algebra. Examples of problems that can be resolved is the matter of determining the unknown quadratic equation roots. Besides that, we can develop new quadratic equations, systems of linear equations one another quadratic equations, questions stories related to inequality, etc.
By using a graph calculator, we can draw a variety of charts. We can make graph of linear inequalities, graph of quadratic equations , graph of linear equations system, and also graphs of linear inequalities.
Using graph calculators as a tool for learning mathematics have positive and negative impacts. Positive Impacts such as calculator cause students to do the problem easier, calculator makes the class more interesting, calculator as a tool just count, with calculator to learn much more developed, the calculator to match the workmanship problem. While, negative impact such as the level of student dependency on graph calculators to be high, losing confidence, students are so lazy to think, a challenge to further problems.
In the process of using graph calculators some students still face difficulties to understanding about the process of entering data into the calculator, interpret, analyze, and provide conclusions from the answers of the calculator. This difficulty can be overcome by asking the teacher or another friend.
